Hyundai plans to launch affordable electric SUV in the Indian market

Hyundai has planning to expand its line-up in the Indian market, by building its most affordable electric SUV. Even though the Indian automobile market going through a transition period Korean carmakers are expanding their Indian lineup. Once again Hyundai claiming to be building the most affordable electric car for the Indian market. Currently, South Korean carmakers only have one electric car Kona, which price starts from Rs 24.00 lakh* ex-showroom. As of now, Hyundai has launched its Kona facelift version in European countries. The electric SUV Kona drew power from a 39.2 kWh battery pack and develops a power of 135PS and peak torque of 395 Nm.

Although Hyundai states they have got a largely positive response for Kona, and the company understands the importance of low-cost electric cars in order to enter the mainstream. Currently, Kona has been imported through the CBU route in India, and thus makes it more expensive for Indian buyers. The manufacturer currently working to manufacturer electric cars in India to lower the cost. S.S.Kim, MD and CEO of Hyundai motor of India has revealed that despite the market slowdown, Hyundai’s plan for the Indian market is unchanged. The brand is currently working on a ‘smart EV’ project under which they will be developing an electric compact SUV that rivals the likes of Tata Nexon, and the upcoming Mahindra’s eXUV300 and eKUV100.     

The New electric SUV won’t be built on the Venue platform, Hyundai will be building a new platform for their Electric SUV. Although the initial cost may be high with new platform ensures that it won’t be compromised for buyers. The being said, the electric infrastructure has been being improved before electric vehicles truly stop being a compromise. For that many government agencies are working towards improving the infrastructure. Many policies have been released to attract more customers to go for electric against gasoline vehicles. Reports also suggest that the new Electric platform will be shared with their cousin brand Kia as well. Also, Hyundai can use the platform to build more compact and sub-compact electric SUVs for the international market as well.
