MG Motors planning on launching an affordable electric hatchback in 2021

The upcoming MG hatchback electric vehicle could be using the same drivetrain as ZS EV, with a smaller battery capacity to make it a more affordable electric vehicle in available space, named as MG3 EV.

MG motors Groupe as per reports working on launching their fully electric hatchback by the end of this year. The car is one of the two fully electric cars in the British car makers pipeline for the year. According to the report, the hatchback Electric vehicle will be similar in Size to the MG3 hatchback, which is currently powered by an internal combustion engine unit. The electric MG3 wouldn’t become the replacement for IC MG3, the hatchback will continue to serve as an affordable hatchback for the brand.

The electric upcoming electric hatchback could take the powertrain from their older sibling ZS EV, which is currently the only electric car for MG motors in the Indian market. Although, the brand could reduce the battery capacity of the hatch in order to keep the hatchback in the affordable range. Current MG motors offering ZS EV gets power from the permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor, which produces a maximum power of 143 PS and a maximum rated torque of 353 Nm. The transmission is offered by a single-speed automatic gearbox system.

 The upcoming MG electric hatchback likely rivals the, Honda e, and mini electric. In the UK MG may price new electric hatchback 20,000 Euro, While ZS EV priced at 23,700 euro before all the other taxes, and which converted to Rs 23,60 lakhs. On the other hand, Indian-Spec MG ZS EV priced range starts from Rs 20.88 lakhs for the starting trim and Rs 23.58 lakhs for the top trim available(All the prices are Ex-showroom). ZS EV equipped with a 44.5 kWh battery capacity which charges up to 80% in 40 minutes from a 50KW DC fast charger. However, it takes 6-7 hours from a 7.4 kW Alternative charger which is set up by the brand free of cost at your home or office. Also, you get a portable socket charger which takes up to 17-18 hours for a full charge. The ARAI certified range for ZS EV is 340 Km. Although, currently ZS EV rivals the Hyundai electric SUV Kona.
