Last year when the BS6 emission norms become mandatory the homegrown brand Tata has to discontinue its long flagship SUV Safari Storme. While almost a year later the brand has back with a legendary car safari nameplate with a 3-row version of Harrier which was earlier showcased in Auto Expo 2020 as Gravitas. The 2021 Tata Safari launched in the Indian market on Feb 22, 2021, and since the launch, many critics were comparing the new version with the older version. Here we put together the details between the 2021 Safari vs Safari Strome: –
- Design elements
In the entirely, Tata safari older version still moves with its 1st generation avatar through out with some minor facelifts and lights updates and there is no-nonsense design improvement been made in its 1st generation avatar, since its launch in 1998.
While on the other hand, new 2021 Safari certainly moved ahead of its previous design towards more modern and advanced Era. The car is built under Tata’s impact 2.0 Styling language and looks have been more improved. Newer version looks more premium and advanced in comparison to Storme, courtesy of new Chromed radiator grille, Split LED headlamps, LED taillights, Stylish roof rails, diamond-cut alloy wheels and so on.
In terms of dimensions the older safari Strome measures, 4655 mm in length, 1855 mm in width, 1922 mm tall, and has a 2650 mm Wheelbase in length. While the 2021 safari measures 4661 mm in length, 1894 mm in width, 1786 mm tall and has a 2741 mm wheelbase in length.

This means that new Safari grown in terms of dimensions as well, separately from the height. The new safari is 6 mm longer, 39 mm wider, and has a 100 mm longer wheelbase compared with older one. Although, the older version is 136 mm taller than the newer model.
The older safari was based on a body-on-frame platform that also been used for Tata Hexa and Aura as well. While the platform is rugged and, the ride and handling weren’t not so good as well, on the ride it gives a bouncy feel and more motion been sensed and feel by the passenger as well as by driver on pot holes.
While on the hand new 2021 Safari based on a land rover D8-derived monocoque architecture also known as Omega Arc. The riding and handling quality is much more improved in comparison with older platform.

As you can see above the newer safari has 14 PS more power and 50 Nm of less torque compared with the Safari Storme. Although, it should also be noted that the older generation of safari known for its off-roading capabilities and rugged design, along with optional all-wheel-drive configuration, which cannot be seen in the newer version.
Also, the 2021 safari powered with a fiat Sourced kryotec diesel engine and has a 6-Speed MT standard and optional 6-Speed torque convertor. While the Strome is much heavier.
On talking about the interior older safari looks outdated as compared with the price range. Although, the new version borrows the interior looks and features from tata’s flagship SUV Harrier. The 2021 safari gets a dual-tone interior with more advanced safety features and provides a premium touch to the car. Also, the side-facing third-row been replaced by a bench seat. The new safari can be had with either a 6-seater and 7-seater configuration.
- Features and safety
While the older version doesn’t have a lot of features to offer but had a decent list like, manual climate control, small infotainment that supports CD, AUX, and USB, analog instrument cluster with small MID, steering mounted controls, and so on.
On the other hand, the 2021 safari gets tons of features like, 8.8-inch floating infotainment system that supports android auto and apple car play, fast-charging USB ports, connected car-technology, a 7-inch instrument cluster, an Auto-Dimming IRVM, electronic parking brake, a panoramic sunroof, JBL audio system, a powered adjustable driver and passenger seats, and so on. On the safety side it gets, ABS with EBD, 6-Airbags, traction control, Hill hold assists, Hill-start, ESP, rollover mitigation as standard, rear parking sensors, rear parking camera, and so on.
- Price comparison
The BS4 version was retailed with a starting price of Rs 11.09 lakh for base trim and Rs 16.44 lakh for the top-end trim (ex-showroom). On the other hand, 2021 safari retailed with a starting price of Rs 14.69 lakhs for base and for top-trim price goes all the up to Rs 21.45 lakh for adventure persona edition (ex-showroom).
Overall, both the version has its own level of pricing and level of capabilities. The older version comes for its off-road capabilities and 4×4 drivetrain, while the newer version doesn’t have the capabilities and is much lighter than the older one. While the new safari gets a whole sum of features and safety features which justifies its pricing. At last, if you are a buyer who loves off-roading SUV’s then the new safari is not for you and if you love the premium touch and advanced more features then the new 2021 safari is the right choice for this price band.
