Google digital car key used for lock/unlock using Android 12

Google digital smart car key will be available from next year in limited vehicle manufacturing brand like BMW in 2021 BMW 5 series.

At the 2021 I/O developers’ event, Google announced that it has partnered with BMW and other automotive giants like BMW to develops the digital car key sued for locking and unlocking or other features in the car using a smartphone. Later this year, the digital car key is available on the Samsung galaxy series and selected google pixel models operating on the Android 12 version. Firstly, the digital car key is present in selected BMW models from 2022 using android smartphones powered with Android 12. It uses ultra-wideband technology as it enables a form of radio transmission with sensors telling the direction of the signal.

The Android 12 enabled smartphones antenna locates and identified the objects having the UWB technology. The cars with NFC technology help in unlocking just by tapping the phone against the door and communicates with an NFC reader located within the door handle. Another interesting fact about the digital key is that it can be shared with your friends and family in a safer manner. The car key comes on the back of Apple Inc introducing a similar technology in 2020 as the users can add a digital car to their IOS 14 enabled watch and iPhone and it came into existence in the 2021 BMW 5 Series.  

With more and more manufacturers are moving towards connected car technologies growing, many automobile manufacturers are spending more and more investment to develop new applications. Google’s VP of engineering Erik kay writes in a blog post; “In north America average person has 8 connected devices and by 2022 this is predicted to be 13 connected devices”. The fast pair technology lets the users connect to their devices in a single tap feature. The car connectivity consortium comprises apple, google, and Samsung alongside auto giants like BMW, Honda, Volkswagen, and so on has spent many years developing a seamless way of generating a standard digital key.
