Jeep is an American automotive manufacturer and now a part of Stellantis. It got their trademark in 1943 and launched their first product in 1945. However, they started designing their prototype in 1940s upon the request of army. This model was also used in the World War II. At that time, the American soldiers used the term” JEEP” as a slang for new recruits. With the successful entry of Willys prototype vehicle into the army, the term stuck for the vehicle renaming it as JEEP and later the company was also branded as JEEP. This vehicle also became the first mass produced rough terrain vehicle and the SUV. Even now, the term is used as the reference for the vehicles of this segment.
Jeep India : About Company, Line-up and more
Jeep vehicle has been produced and sold in India under the license of Mahindra and Mahindra since 1960s. However, the company officially entered in Indian market in 2016 and started its operations under Fiat Chrysler Automobiles India Private Limited (FCAIPL). FCA produces the vehicles under the brand of Fiat, Abarth and Jeep. Initially, company came with three models the Wrangler, Grand Cherokee and sports Grand Cherokee all to be imported from U.S. at that time. Later in 2017, Jeep started their production of their first vehicle in India after they setup the production plant in Pune, India. The first vehicle that came out of that plant was the well-known Jeep Compass. The company produced this vehicle for domestic as well as international market which are now is being exported from India.
Currently, company has a line-up of two vehicles in India. Out of which one of them, the Compass, is being produced locally while the other, Wrangler, is yet imported.
